Anti Design Festival

Here is an interesting event. The Anti Design Festival. I can't explain it better than the manifesto, so here it is:

We are living in an age where millions of colours became 256. Difference is the enemy. Generic culture hypnotises us all into generic patterns, where control is visibly invisible. Danger is replaced by fear. New means upgrade. Risk is obsolete. Art made money stupid, and money made us fools. We welcome no_use, no_function and no_fear. Anarchy, crash and burn, the new awaits.

From Learning to Earning, and now to Yearning, we have forgotten why we are here. We have lost touch with what made us tick, the fire of creative possibility that once consumed us from within.

Revolutionary thought is but a distant memory. I grew up as part of a generation that thought it could help improve society; that our sole function was to be conscious and to spread that consciousness through creative awareness, exploration, observation and questioning.

This generation was replaced by the Thatcher/Reagan paradigm of Culture=Money. Thinkers became earners, Creatives became entertainers, and a whole dumbed-down generation now feels entitled to success and profit without having to work or think too much.

We are now left with a spiritual hollowness. The belief systems of consumption and commodity have been exposed as empty. Revolution is a distant echo lost in the white noise, and religion has been largely subsumed by globalisation. Virtual experiences have replaced human touch. Analogue culture is now the exotic.

We have managed to create for our children, perhaps for the first time in history, a future which is less hopeful than the one we live in today.

Deep Freeze

The house of credit cards has now collapsed. For 25 years we have been in a state of Deep Freeze. We have somehow denied ourselves permission to remember what it was like before the Big Bang of banking deregulation. Schools became businesses and hospitals became profit centres. Art for art’s sake was sacrificed for entertainment and bums on seats. Ideas became clichŽs and anything different was viewed with suspicion and disdain. We have traded Freedom for Peace. What we need is Liberation.

Jet Blue Employee Uses the Essentials

So, by now you've probably heard the story of Steven Slater. He's the (former) flight attendant for Jet Blue who after being berated by a customer while stuck on the tarmac at JFK, decided to give everyone a giant, "take this job and shove it," message by sharing some choice words over the PA, grabbing two beers, employing an emergency chute and sliding to the ground where he sauntered off and away. Here is a reenactment of what happened.

Fang Island.

I know this group has been around for a while now, but I am really into this album and I had to share it with you all. It's called Fang Island, by Fang Island. No reason for me to write something clever about this one, the band already did that for me:

The band got its name from an article in The Onion. Guitarist Jason Bartell recalled, "I think it was just a funny blip about Donald Rumsfeld having a secret hideaway, and it was on Fang Island. We like how it was sort of this, like, fictional space that we imagined our music was played on". The band describes their sound as "everyone high-fiving everyone" and their goal, according to Bartell, is to "make music for people who like music".

Man, I am happy that you all are digging on the "Death of Industry" Shirt. Guys and ladies both are picking this one up, and for good reason. It's time that we should be riding our bikes to work and to the beach. It's time that we use a lot less electricity that is made by pumping coal soot into our skies. It's past the time...

Last night an Exel sub station of our power company exploded and the power went out. We went outside to go for a bike ride, and the neighborhood looked like I imagined it did in the 1920's, before TV, before the internet. People were talking. People were walking. PEOPLE WERE SMILING. I kinda wish the power would go out more often!

It has been a minute since our last post, and for a couple of reasons. One, we have been working hard on designing some sick new designs that will look amazing on your chest. Two, Pat's jaw wasn't healing right (lucky him) and he had to go back into surgery to have it re-broken and do another attempt at fixing his face. What's more, he woke up in the middle of surgery and nearly went into cardiac arrest. Thank god he didn't! Hopefully this time the surgery works and we can all go out for a steak when he can chew again. So please keep him in your thoughts so he can heal faster!

Bonobo: Black Sands

I just picked up the new Bonobo Album, "Black Sands" and if you don't have it already you need to pick it up. Dez Hill introduced me to Bonobo driving through a Moab canyon in the middle of the night looking for firewood, and I think that is the perfect explanation of the feeling you get when you listen to this album. A little anticipation, a little blurry speed, and a little fire. I would say "Black Sands" is a blend of a little DJ Shadow, a little Flying Lotus, and a little Four tet. All of which I groove to on a regular basis. Check it out!

On a blog about board riding we run into a few messed up injuries. However, I would have to say that this one is the worst yet.

Over the weekend my brother Pat, co-founder of Essentials, was in Las Vegas doing a little gambling and enjoying himself. While waiting for a cab around 3 am he got into what he thought was a friendly conversation with a few others waiting as well. A few words flew, and so did a punch, that ended up connecting with Pat's face. Well, he went back to San Diego the next day with a very sore jaw, and got ahold of me via video conference. That's when I saw it. One fucked up jaw. It didn't align, and he couldn't move it really at all (although he will tell you differently). He took a Ibuprofen and went to sleep.

The next morning, straight the to ER. Emergency surgery to wire a jaw broken in 3 places together. Dudes face was messed up. I am posting a picture that he looked like because I promised him I wouldn't post the real picture.

I am extremely excited to let you know that the King of the Hill contest is back!

El Nino has been a bitch. Turns out Baltimore has had more snow this year than most of the Colorado Ski Resorts. The snow pack in Utah and Colorado is bad. Real Bad. Not to mention we are moving into spring, where on average snow in the mountains melts away at 3 inches a day. Well, I just got this image in via the weather wire (thanks Shane) and I am praying that the huge green swatch of gnarly weather on the left comes to Colorado and dumps on us. We need one last huge storm before we go into full-on spring riding mode.
